Caption: Blood supply to brain. Coloured arteriograph show- ing the blood supply to the human brain. The brain is the most oxygen-hungry organ in the human body. It receives 20% of the heart's output of blood, and is irreversibly damaged if starved of oxygen for more than a few minutes. Arteriographs are made by taking an X-ray of a patient after injecting the bloodstream with a substance opaque to X-rays. Arteriographs of the brain are sometimes used to look for disorders like blocked arteries, which can lead to stroke.
