Caption: Human brain. Computer graphic of a healthy human brain, in side view. The brain fits tightly within the surrounding protective bones of the cranium. The external anatomy of the left side of the brain is seen here. The largest, most developed region of the brain is the cerebrum which appears highly folded with convolutions; it is involved in higher conscious thought, speech, language, and memory. At lower left is the smaller smoother cerebellum which maintains body posture, balance, and co- ordinates movement. At bottom is the brainstem which attaches to the spinal cord and which controls basic functions such as breathing and eye blinking.
