Caption: Section through a human head. Axial (transverse) slice through the healthy human head of a male, showing the brain and ear canal in natural colours. This is the Visible Human Project. The nose is at top, with maxillary sinuses coloured blue. At centre right is the dark ear canal leading to the eardrum. At centre is the brainstem (oval); folded cerebellum tissue of the hindbrain is seen at lower centre (light brown). The cerebellum maintains posture and balance, and coordinates muscle movement. The Visible Human Project is a US project to archive both a male and female body. Each body is CT and MRI scanned, then sectioned, for medical research and education.
