Caption: Human brain. Computer-enhanced image of the human brain, seen from above. This part of the brain is called the cerebral cortex and is the site of "higher" faculties such as intelligence and consciousness. It is divided into two distinct cerebral hemispheres and its surface is deeply folded into lobes, which are named after bones of the skull and associated with particular mental functions. The cerebral cortex is the outer surface of a part of the brain called the cerebrum. The cerebrum is unusually large in humans, accounting for nearly 70% of the weight of the entire nervous system. The whole adult brain weighs 1.4kg and has a consistency like jelly.
