Caption: Healthy brain. Coloured sagittal slice through a healthy human brain. The front of the brain is at left. At top is the much folded and convoluted cerebrum. This is the largest region of the brain and is involved in conscious and intelligent thought, memory, speech and language. Beneath it (at lower right) is the smaller cerebellum, also highly folded. This region maintains body posture, balance, and coordinates movement. The brainstem (at bottom right) controls basic functions such as breathing and is linked to the spinal cord (off the frame). Coloured black (centre left) is a ventricle, a cavity which in life contains cerebrospinal fluid.
