Caption: Smell centres. Artwork of a sagittal section of the head showing the nerves and brain areas associated with the sense of smell. The smell centres (purple) consist of the olfactory bulb (centre left), and an area in the temporal lobe of the brain (upper left). The olfactory bulb has several fibres projecting down into the nasal cavity. These fibres have receptors which are specific for a particular smell, and give rise to a particular nerve impulse. The brain recognises each impulse, and converts it into the sensation of smell.
