Caption: Head section. Artwork of a sagittal section through a human head. The brain (upper centre) takes up most of the head. Its largest part, the cerebrum, controls thoughts and conscious decisions. Below the cerebrum at the rear is the cerebellum, concerned with balance and posture. Running vertically next to the cerebellum is the brainstem, which joins the brain to the spinal cord. The spinal cord is protected by the neck vertebrae (yellow), which surround it. Left of the spinal cord are the trachea (windpipe, blue) and oesophagus (pink), which take air to the lungs and food and drink to the stomach respectively.
