Caption: Macrophotograph of the flowerhead of an oriental poppy, Papaver orientale, showing reproductive structures. At centre is the large compound ovary (green with many purple stigmatic surfaces on its tip), surrounded by dark stamens which produce large quantities of pollen. The ovary becomes the capsule containing seeds. This is a bee pollinated flower, producing no nectar, and relying on pollen and its colourful petals to attract bees. The petals of this cultivated hybrid are white at base, with scarlet tips. Papaver orientale origin- ates from Armenia.
