Caption: Basal ganglia of the brain, coloured 3-D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. The brain is seen from the side, sectioned at the level of the basal ganglia, the various parts of which are colour- coded. The caudate nuclei are green. Behind them are the lenticular nuclei, comprising the putamen (yellow) and the globus pallidus (dark blue). The basal ganglia are responsible for processing information from much of the rest of the brain, which they then pass to the thalami (red), which modulates the information. Behind the thalami are the Cornu Ammonis of the hippocampus (orange), which is involved in memory and navigation.
