Caption: Human brain. Computer artwork of a human brain and the top of its spinal cord (lower left). The front of the brain is at upper right. The brain is the nerve centre controlling bodily function and thought. It interprets nerve signals received from the rest of the body and initiates the appropriate responses. Most of the visible surface consists of the folds of the cerebral cortex, the region responsible for intelligent thought, language, conscious movement and memory. Areas dealing with more basic functions are towards the base of the brain, such as the brainstem that emerges from the base of the brain, and becomes the spinal cord. Nerves are seen branching off the spinal cord.
