Caption: Colour-coded image of the brain of a newborn human infant, produced using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The absence of white areas on the scan indicates a lack of myelin, a complex material formed of protein and phospholipid that is laid down as a sheath around the axons of certain nerve cells in the brain, forming an insulating layer around the fibre. Myelinated nerves conduct impulses more rapidly than non-myelinated fibres. 1st in a series of 7.
