Caption: Colour-coded image of the brain of a child aged 9 years , produced using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). The white areas of the scan indicate the developing presence of myelin, a complex material formed of protein and phospholipid that is laid down as a sheath around the axons of certain nerve cells in the brain, forming an insulating layer around the fibre. Myelinated nerves conduct impulses more rapidly than non-myelinated fibres. In addition, the purple edged areas of the cerebral cortex, and the developing ventricles (the fluid-filled cavities in the centre of the brain) are apparent. 6th in a series of 7.
