Caption: False-colour Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) of an axial section through a human head, showing the division of the bulk of the brain into left & right cerebral hemispheres. The section of this scan was made at eye-level - vitreous humour inside each eye appears in gold & grey. The layer of fat under the skin of the scalp appears in various colours around the edge of the image. Bone of the skull and the cerebro-spinal fluid which bathes the brain appear black. MRI is also called NMR - nuclear magnetic resonance - the name of the physical principal upon which the imaging technique is based.
