Caption: Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) image of a mid- sagittal section through the head of a man, superimposed over his profile. The NMR image shows structures of the brain, spine and facial tissues. Profiled features of the main part of the brain include the convoluted surface of the cerebral cortex (brown & gold) & the corpus callosum, the curved black feature at the centre of the brain which is the band of nervous tissue that connects the two cerebral hemispheres. Beneath the corpus callosum are the pons & medulla, structures of the brainstem, which are continuous with the spinal cord. The cerebellum, the centre of balance and coordination, lies to the left of the brainstem.
