Caption: Chrysanthemum flower. Close-up of the "flower" of Chrysanthemum carinatum, an annual garden plant with large colourful flowers. C. Carinatum is a member of the Compositae family. Like other Com- positae its "flowers" are actually clusters of many tiny individual flowers, or florets. The yellow and red "petals" are sterile ray florets. The smaller florets within are fertile. Those in the outer ring are mature and have opened to expose their pollen-bearing anthers to visiting insects. As time passes the florets towards the centre will open, with those in the middle flowering last.
