Caption: Head scan. Coloured digitised magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the head of a 40 year old woman, seen in side view. A profile of her face is at left. Cavities of the mouth and nose are visible. The convoluted cerebrum (at top, red) makes up most of the brain; intelligent thought processes, memory and conscious movement are processed here. At ear level, the cerebellum is a smaller folded region of brain tissue beneath the cerebrum. The cerebellum determines body posture, balance and coordination of body movement. Lines drawn through the head depict "slices" of the brain which can be visualised by MRI scanning.
