Caption: Healthy brain. Coloured three-dimensional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan of a human head, sectioned to show a healthy brain. Contours of the face are seen. The highlighted brain is seen both in sagittal and coronal section. The brain largely consists of the folded cerebrum (at top, front and side). The cerebrum is responsible for conscious- ness and intelligent activities. At ear level is the cerebellum, concerned with body posture, balance and coordination. At centre is the tube- like brainstem attached to the spinal cord, and which controls basic functions such as breathing and eye reflexes. This is a composite image of many MRI scan "slices" of the head.
