Caption: Healthy brain. Coloured Computed Tomography (CT) scan through the human head, showing the brain in sagittal (side) view. The face is at left. The cavity (red) of the nose, and tongue (blue) in the mouth is seen. Inside the skull the cerebrum of the brain appears highly folded (at top); this part of the brain is involved in conscious and intelligent thought. At the level of the ear is the smaller triangular cerebellum which maintains body posture, balance, and coordinates movement. The brainstem is the tubular structure (at centre) linked to the spinal cord (not seen). CT scanning creates "slice" images through the body using X- rays, and can detect brain tumours and cancer.
