Caption: Healthy brain. Coloured Computed Tomography (CT) scan through a human head showing the brain in sagittal (side) view. The face is at lower left. At top, the cerebrum has folds and convolutions; this is the largest region of the brain and is involved in conscious and intelligent thought, memory, speech and language. Beneath it (at lower right) is the smaller triangular cerebellum, also highly folded; it maintains body posture, balance, and coordinates movement. The brainstem (at lower centre) controls basic functions such as breathing and is linked to the spinal cord. CT scanning creates "slice" images through the brain and body using X-rays.
