Caption: MRI brain scan. Coloured Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan of a healthy human brain. This horizontal, or axial, image shows the skull (light blue) surrounding the brain's two cerebral hemispheres (at left and right). The brain contains white matter (blue and green), which consists of nerve fibres, and grey matter (red and yellow), which consists of nerve cell bodies. The two v-shaped areas (at centre) are fluid filled cavities of the inner brain called ventricles. Folds can be seen in the outer areas of the brain. MRI scanning produces "slices" of the brain allowing accurate medical diagnosis.
