Caption: Brain in head. Coloured three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a sagittal (side) view of a human head containing a cross-section of healthy brain. The main part of the brain is the fissured cerebrum (at upper centre), the site of conscious brain activity. This encloses various structures at the centre of the brain, which link the two halves of the cerebrum and the brainstem together. Both the branched cerebellum (at centre right) and the elongated brainstem to its left control vital bodily functions. MRI scanners build images of the body using pulses of radio waves. Successive "slices" are compiled into a 3-D image by computer.
