Caption: MRI brain scan. Coloured three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a sagittal (side) section through a healthy brain. The main part of the brain is the fissured cerebrum (pink, green & blue, at upper centre), the site of conscious brain activity. This encloses various structures at the centre of the brain, such as the sausage-shaped corpus callosum which links the two halves of the cerebrum together. Both the branched cerebellum (at centre right) and the elongated brainstem to its left control vital bodily functions. MRI scanners use pulses of radio waves to build "slice" images which are compiled into a 3-D image by computer.
