Caption: Healthy brain. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a healthy human brain. The front of the brain is to the right. This horizontal, or axial, image shows the skull surrounding the brain's two cerebral hemispheres (at top and bottom). The brain contains white matter (inside the brain) which consists of nerve fibres, and grey matter (folded, outside the brain) which consists of nerve cell bodies. The two v-shaped areas (at centre right) are fluid filled cavities of the inner brain called ventricles. MRI scanning produces "slices" of the brain allowing accurate medical diagnosis.
