Caption: Healthy brain. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of an axial (horizontal) section of the human head. The cerebrum of the brain (red & blue) is divided into left and right hemispheres. It controls conscious thoughts. The midbrain (red, centre), the top of the brainstem, joins the cerebrum to the cerebellum (blue, above midbrain), which controls balance and posture. At lower left and right are the eyes (yellow) with their associated muscles (orange). Between the eyes is the nose. MRI is a useful diagnostic technique which gives slice images of the body. It uses radio waves and a magnetic field to provoke tissu- es to emit signals depending on their composition.
