Caption: Limbic system. Coloured three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the limbic system of a healthy human brain. The front of the brain is at left. The limbic system is involved in instinct, emotion and establishing memories. It consists of an arc of structures, such as the hippocampus and fornix (both mid brown, hippocampus is thicker), that lie below the corpus callosum (pale brown, centre). The thalamus (blue oval, centre) and cingulate gyrus (pink, above the corpus callosum) are also seen. This image was compiled from successive slice MRI scans at the Laboratory of Neuro Imaging (LONI) at UCLA, USA.
