Caption: Brain scan. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a sagittal (side view) section through a healthy brain. Conscious brain activity occurs in the folded cerebrum (blue & green), which is the largest part of the brain. The cerebellum (yellow, lower right) controls balance, posture and muscle tone. The pons (orange, lower centre) is involved with relaying impulses between different parts of the brain. The corpus callosum (pink, centre) connects the two brain hemispheres together. MRI uses radio waves and a powerful magnetic field to create slice images through the body.
