Caption: Brain. Coloured sagittal (side view) MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan through the centre of a human head, revealing brain structure. The corpus callosum (blue) is a band of nervous tissue that connects the left and right brain hemispheres. The cerebellum (triangular, below and to the right of the corpus callosum) controls balance, posture and muscle tone. The folded cerebrum, the large outer layers of the brain, controls conscious brain activity. The brainstem (left of the cerebellum) controls basic automatic functions such as breathing, and becomes the spinal cord that runs down between the neck vertebrae (lower centre).
