Caption: Brain. Coloured three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a healthy human brain. The front of the brain is at top. Only the largest part of the brain, the cerebrum, is seen here. The cerebrum is divided into two hemispheres, each of which is made up of ridges (gyri, red) separated by deep fissures (sulci, yellow). The cerebrum controls conscious thoughts and actions. MRI scanning uses a powerful magnet and radio waves to build up slice images through the body. Slice images can be combined on a computer to create 3-D views. MRI is an important diagnostic tool, and is widely used to study brain structure and abnormalities.
