Caption: Brain anatomy. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sagittal scan of the brain. The front of the brain is at right. The scan has halved the brain to show the internal anatomy. The brain's major region, the cerebrum (blue), includes the folded outer layer (cerebral cortex) that produces memory, language and conscious movement. Deeper, more primitive, parts of the brain (pink) include the cerebellum (round, lower left), the brainstem (right of cerebellum) and the region (centre) that includes the limbic system for mood and instinct. The pituitary gland (yellow) is the master gland that is directed by the brain's hypothalamus to secrete hormones that control other glands.
