Caption: This is a normal cross sectional MRI image of the head through the internal auditory canals, cerebellum and brainstem. The circular ring-like structures are the semi-circular canals of the inner ears. The internal auditory canals are tubular spaces on each side of the head which transmit the 7th (facial) and 8th (vestibular cochlear) cranial nerves. The 7th nerve provides motor function to the face. The 8th nerve provides hearing (auditory) and vestibular function (balance and position). The smaller anatomical structure in front of (above) the cerebellum is the brainstem.
