Caption: Brain. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a sagittal section through a healthy human brain. At upper centre is one of the hemispheres of the cerebrum, which is responsible for conscious thought, emotion and voluntary movement. At the centre of the cerebrum is the corpus callosum (bright yellow), which is made of nerve axons and connects the cerebral hemispheres. At the base of the brain are the cerebellum (left), which controls voluntary muscular movement and maintains posture and balance and the brainstem (centre), which controls subconscious functions such as breathing and the regulation of heart rate. It also connects the brain to the spinal cord (centre bottom).
