Caption: Eyes, optic nerves and brain, coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. The eyeballs are at top. Some of the muscles (orange) that control their movement are seen on either side of each eyeball. The optic nerve (blue) runs back from the centre of each eyeball. The brain (dark blue, folded) is seen in lower frame. MRI is a diagnostic technique in which a powerful magnet is used to align the hydrogen atoms in the body. A radio frequency pulse is then used to knock the atoms out of alignment, and the energy they release as they realign is used to build up an image of the tissues that contain them.
