Caption: Clematis flower. Single flower of the Virgins' Bower plant, Clematis flammula. It belongs to the buttercup family Ranunculaceae. Four sepals are seen, coloured white to pink, and numerous anthers surround the pistil. The flower gives off a sweet almond scent. C. flammula occurs in southern Europe and has been cultivated in England since the 16th century. It flowers in late summer to autumn. The plant is a strong growing deciduous climber used to drape trees, walls and hedges. Many species of Clematis are found, with flower colour ranging from white to blue or red.
