Caption: Healthy brain. Coloured single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scans of sections through a healthy human brain. These are axial (horizontal, XY), sagittal (side, YZ) and frontal (XZ) sections. The colours show different levels of activity within the brain tissue, through red (high activity), orange, yellow, green and blue to black (very low activity). SPECT scans use radioactive tracers, injected into the blood, that accumulate in areas of high metabolic activity. The tracer is detected by a gamma camera, allowing the study of active areas. This is useful in diagnosing disorders of brain function, such as Alzheimer's disease. For SPECT scans of a brain showing Alzheimer's disease see image M108/654.
