Caption: Healthy child's brain, coloured 3-D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. This is a side view, with the front of the head at left. The 3-D view of the brain has been superimposed on a 2-D scan of the entire head. The largest part of the brain is the cerebrum, whose outer layer, the cerebral cortex, is highly folded. This is the region that controls conscious thoughts and actions. The brain is linked to the rest of the body through the brainstem, which runs down just right of lower centre. MRI scanning uses radio waves and a powerful magnet to image body tissues, and is widely used to study the nervous system.
