Caption: Healthy brain, coloured SPECT scan. This is a top view of the head, with the front at top. SPECT (single positron emission computed tomography) uses a radioactive isotope, in this case technetium-99m (Tc-99m) to show the activity of brain tissue, active tissue taking up more. Brain activity is colour-coded here, from red (most active) through yellow to green and blue (least active). For similar scans of brains affected by the wasting disorder Alzheimer's disease, see M108/662 (temporal and parietal lobes affected) and M108/663 (frontal lobes affected).
