Caption: Sunflower. Gulf Fritillary butterfly resting on the face of a blooming sunflower, Helianthus sp.. The butterfly and flower have a symbiotic relationship which benefits both species. The butterfly feeds on a sugary solution (nectar) that is produced by the flower. As the butterfly feeds, it becomes dusted with grains of pollen. The pollen may be brushed off the insect when it visits another sunflower. This pollen will then fertilise (pollinate) the flower. Photographed in Kansas, USA.
