Caption: Healthy brain and arteries. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan showing healthy arteries (white) supplying a human brain (red) with oxygenated blood. The front of the head is at top. Also seen are the frontal sinuses (brown strip, top), which are air spaces in the forehead that are lined with mucous membranes. CT scanning uses beams of X-rays fired at different angles to build up slice images through the body. It is useful for detecting many brain disorders such as haemorrhages and tumours.
