Caption: Verbal short-term memory. Colour Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan of the human brain showing areas involved in verbal short-term memory. Here, the left cerebral hemisphere is seen. Highlighted in green-red are two regions of high-activity associated with Broca's area (at left) and the inferior parietal/superior temporal cortex (at right). These regions were activated when the subject was keeping in mind a string of letters for a few seconds. Active areas show cerebral blood flow detected by PET, and then superimposed onto a three-dimensional MRI (Magnetic Resonance Image) view of the brain.
