Caption: Brain language centres. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a brain showing the areas concerned with language (green/orange). The areas have been imaged using magnetoencephalo- graphy (MEG), a technique which measures magnetic fields generated by tiny electrical nerve impulses in the brain. The subject was asked to repeat a few words several times during this test. The areas of high activity are occurring in the left cerebral hemisphere. The two hemispheres control different functions. Amongst other things, the left controls language and writing, while the right controls recognition of objects and sounds.
