Caption: Brain activity during the hearing of words. This is a composite of a 3-D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan (blue) of the brain, overlaid with positron emission tomography (PET) scan data (red/green) showing brain activity. The brain is seen from the side, with the front of the brain at left. In this test, words are being heard, and part of the temporal lobe (lower right) is most active. This area is associated with language and the comprehension of words. For similar scans showing thinking about words, and the speaking and reading of words, see images P335/076, 077 and 078 respectively.
