Caption: Spinal cord. Artwork of a woman's back with her spinal cord and spinal nerves revealed. The spinal cord, an extension of the brain, is responsible for relaying sensory information to the brain from the rest of the body. The cord also passes motor information from the brain to muscles and glands. Sensory and motor impulses pass along the 31 spinal nerves that emerge from either side of the spinal cord. The spinal cord is protected from damage by the vertebrae of the spinal column (not seen).
