Caption: Lower spine. Coloured myelogram of a healthy lumbar (lower) spine. The spinal cord (white, down centre), contains nerve fibres surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid. It is protected by the bones of the vertebral column (vertebrae, blocks). The rear diagonal protrubences of the bones are seen either side of the vertebrae. A myelogram uses a contrast medium injected into the cerebrospinal fluid to highlight the spinal canal during an X- ray.
