Caption: Spinal cord and peripheral nerves. The body requires rapid, two-way communications with all its territories. Branching symmetrically from the spinal cord, 31 pairs of nerves penetrate muscle, skin, and gland via a 30,000 mile network that relays information almost instantaneously to and from the brain. The peripheral nerves and the main trunk line and subdivide the body into front and back, then again by region. The regions in the trunk are roughly horizontal, but those in the limbs are aligned lengthwise.
