Caption: Nerve fibres: Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of nerve fibres. The connective tissue that bundles groups of nerve fibres together as fascicles has been removed, revealing the parallel fibres (of varying diameter, yellow) and associated blood vessels (blue). These nerve fibres are myelinated, that is, they are insulated by a protein sheath (myelin) which assists in the conduction of the electrical nerve impulses. The external surfaces of the Schwann cells that surround myelinated nerves form the yellow- coloured structures in this image. Magnification: x385 at 35mm, x1120 at 6x7cm size.
