Caption: Brain nerve fibres and cells. Light micrograph of grouped nerve fibres (axons, black) and isolated nerve cells (brown) in the human cerebrum. The connective tissue of the brain (neuroglia, orange) is also seen. Axons are the effector part of nerve cells (neurones) that transmit impulses to other areas of the brain or organs of the body. As here they often form bundles of nerves running in parallel; in the cerebral cortex these axon nerve fibres form interconnections with thousands of other brain cells. The cerebrum is the largest area of the brain and is responsible for human consciousness, memory, intellect, & voluntary body activities. Magnification: x94 at 6x7cm size.
