Caption: Sciatic nerve. Light micrograph of a cross-section through the human sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve in the thigh is the major nerve of the leg. At centre, its full diameter can be seen, surrounded by a layer of loose connective tissue called the epineurium (dark brown). The nerve consists of bundles (fascicles) of nerve fibres; each fascicle contains numerous individual nerve fibres of different dimensions (yellow, light brown). The sciatic nerve is the thickest in the body, measuring 2cm in diameter at its root. From the lower spine, it divides into branches which serve muscles and skin of the leg. Magnification: x20 at 35mm size.
