Caption: Nerve bundle. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a nerve bundle (orange) in the skin. The bundle contains both myelinated and non-myelinated nerve fibres. Three nerves (centre left) are seen surrounded by myelin sheaths (dark green). Myelin is a fatty substance which aids the conduction of signals along the nerve. Nerves carry signals around the body in the form of electrical impulses. The dark dots in the skin around the nerve bundle are collagen fibres. Collagen is a structural protein found throughout the body in the skin, bones and tendons. Magnification unknown.
