Caption: Nerve fibres. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through non- myelinated nerve fibres (red). These fibres are arranged in bundles surrounded by the cytoplasm of Schwann cells (green). The bundles are surrounded by collagen fibres (pink). The nerve fibres are said to be non-myelinated as they lack the concentric sheaths which surround other types of nerve. Myelin sheaths improve the conduction of nerve impulses. Usually it is smaller nerves, such as those of the autonomic nervous system, which are non-myelinated. Magnification: x64,000 at 35mm size.
