Caption: Nerve fibres. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of sectioned nerve fibres (yellow) in skeletal muscle tissue (red). These are motor neurons, which are responsible for telling the muscle when to contract. The fibres are myelinated. Each is surrounded by a sheath of myelin (black), a fatty substance which improves the conduction of signals along the nerve. Skeletal muscle is under conscious control, responding to signals from the brain conveyed along these nerves. Magnification: x7600 at 35mm size.
